(June 02, 2006) – Dr. Joan Schiller is widely published and internationally recognized for her work in lung cancer clinical research. She is the newly appointed deputy director of Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and division director of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas which ranks among the top academic medical centers in the world. Dr. Schiller also is chairperson of the Thoracic Oncology Committee of the Eastern Co-operative Oncology Group, an editor for the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the principal investigator on many national clinical trials for lung cancer.

Prior to accepting her new position in Dallas, for 22 years she was at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she served as head of the University of Wisconsin Lung Cancer Disease Orientated Working Group, actively treated patients with lung cancer as head of the University of Wisconsin’s Combined Modality Lung Cancer Clinic, and was the principal investigator on many University of Wisconsin clinical trials for lung cancer.

Dr. Schiller graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School and completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She then completed a clinical fellowship in the Department of Human Oncology at the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center where she became the Melanie Heald Professor in the Department of Medicine, Section of Medical Oncology, and subsequently served as head of the Lung Cancer Program at the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Schiller has served on a variety of National Institutes of Health (NIH) and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) committees, including the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Concept Evaluation Panel, the NCI Lung Cancer Progress Review Group, and ASCO’s Program Committee in 2000 and 2001. She was Chair of ASCO’s Bylaws Committee, has served on the International Scientific Committee for the 10th and 11th World Conferences on Lung Cancer, and is chair of the Public Issues Committee for the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. Currently she is serving on the NCI Lung Cancer “I2” team.

Dr. Schiller’s research has generated well over 200 publications that she has authored or co-authored, including articles, abstracts, book chapters, books, reviews and invited manuscripts.

In 2001, Dr. Schiller formed National Lung Cancer Partnership (formerly Women Against Lung Cancer) with colleagues throughout the nation, and is actively involved in all facets of the organization.
